“Oh, Susan, baby,” Justin crooned, as he began rubbing her back. “That was such a horrible
thing to witness. I wish I could take your memory of those events away.” Her return comment
was incomprehensibly mumbled against the blankets. “What was that? I can’t understand you
when you talk into the comforter like that.”
Lifting her head, Susan met his glance. “I said, ‘I want to keep my memories from last night,
thank you.’ Anyway, Emma had a reason for showing me what happened to her, I just need to
figure out why.” Shaking her head and throwing back the blankets, she said, “Well, lying here in
bed isn’t going to solve this mystery any faster. So, what did you do today and why is the laptop
sitting on the edge of the bed?”
Picking up the computer before it fell to the floor, Justin opened the lid and turned the screen so
she could see the information, as he explained. “I couldn’t just sit and do nothing all day, so I
brought the laptop up here and did research while you slept.” Rubbing the back of his neck to
ease stiffness, he added, “Believe me Susan, sitting in front of this computer trying to find useful
information hasn’t been easy. I don’t know …”
Justin was interrupted by a computer-generated voice saying ‘There’s a letter in your mailbox!’
“Wow, I wonder if that’s a reply to one of my inquiries from this morning?” Seeing the puzzled
expression on Susan’s face, he quickly continued. “Let’s open the Inbox first and then I’ll
explain everything.” After a series of quick keystrokes, the e-mail Inbox was opened and he
smiled when he saw the address in the sender column. “Great, it’s from the website I was hoping
to hear from,” he told her.
“Well, are you gonna explain what this is all about or are you just going to continue teasing
me?” she asked with a mildly annoyed look on her face.
“Testy, aren’t we?” Justin asked, while accessing the internet server and pulling up the first
website he wanted to show her. “This morning, after tucking you into bed, I began working on
some research. Well, I pretty much struck out looking into Burnsville’s history using your usual
search engines, and I was able to find minimal new information concerning the other murders
listed in your notes,” he waved his hand toward a manila file folder lying on the bed, “so I tried a
different approach altogether.”
He turned the laptop screen so Susan could see the flashing banner scrolling across the top,
which read, ‘Family Trees R Us’. “I decided to use a genealogy site; I thought maybe their
information could help us.” Raking his fingers through his shoulder-length hair, Justin continued
“I don’t know, I guess I just thought that if we had the professionals research some on the key
players in this little mystery, we could figure out why these things are happening now.”
