“Oh, you’re not dreaming, Dan ‘The Man.’ You’re not dead either – though you will be soon enough. Don’t you worry about that.”
The voice sounded exactly like Janice. But that didn’t make any sense – unless…
“I saw the two of you together last night. You looked quite comfortable with pretty Miss Clemmons sitting on your lap in her birthday suit.”
The scene from last night flashed through his mind once again. He remembered Stacy sitting on his lap wearing nothing but a smile. He had turned to look out the window, desperately trying to break the seductive spell she wove. But then something odd happened. A small hole appeared in the glass, sending a spider web of cracks everywhere. There was a splash of crimson against the window. Maybe there were kids in the neighborhood with rocks or paint ball guns. But if not that, then…
The voice continued. “Neither of you saw me walk into your office. You sat there in your big leather chair, facing away from me, looking out the window. I pulled out my .357 magnum and put a bullet through her brain.”
“A friend of mine made a silencer for it. Oh, I know that silencers are illegal here in Indiana, but so is murder.” She giggled at her sly joke; Dan found it anything but funny.
As an after thought she humorously added, “I’m sorry about the hole in your office window. I didn’t expect the bullet to go completely through her head. I’ll have a new pane installed, after I inherit your business.”
Dan was dumbfounded. He didn’t know what to say. How could this voice belong to his loving wife? His thoughts were spinning dizzily as he continued listening.
“I would’ve blown you away too, but when Stacy’s dead body fell, she pulled you down with her. You were knocked out cold when your head hit the hardwood floor. I think things worked out better this way. It would have been a shame to waste a bullet on you.”
Could Janice really be capable of this? It seemed impossible. She played judge, jury and executioner in this nightmare come true. There was a major problem though – he was innocent.
