Lamp Post
By: Ellen Millman

Something sparked inside me,
the first time I caught your glance.
It was like a dim light at the end of a very long dirt road.

The dust was blinding but the light was surely there,
steadily burning...

Sometimes it takes a dimly lit lamp post,
to guide you out of a dense fog...
You were my lamp post.

Except now I am farther down this path,
my journey is extraordinary and nothing
can compare to this dirt road.

My eye’s do not deceive me,
my senses all alive and well,
now that I have traveled into this
questionable yet immoral world.

This path has become destructive,
but I am sorely addicted to that burning lamp post.

Once I thought I was becoming closer...
almost to touch… near enough to feel
the warmth of your flame.

Only to find that I had been deceived,
this road beneath me is but an illusion,
did I create it in my mind?
Did you plant the seed, only to have me conceive of it?

I feel my feet yet moving beneath me,
I'm drawn to complete this journey...
though my destination... unattainable.

So plain to see that you are my lamp post,
that burning flame, at the end of this beautiful
dirt road.

Even if I dreamed it...
My reality could not compare.
