“Libeth, allow me to introduce Merik Ladien. He is something of a healer, as I understand it. Merik, this is my wife, Queen Libeth Forsythia, the most beautiful woman in all of Avendis. Merik was just about to leave. Our meal will be delayed no longer.”
Merik walked toward Libeth. “My Lady, you look absolutely stunning. Your face glows with maternal radiance.”
Libeth blushed as Merik took her hand and bent to kiss it. “Thank you for your kind words, Lord Ladien.”
“Please, my Lady, I insist you call me Merik. I’m not of royal blood as you are. I have no claims to Lordship.” Merik released her hand and gazed at the tiny girl beside the Queen. “And who’s this lovely child at your side?”
The Queen introduced the young girl. “This is my handmaiden, Caroline, the daughter of my older sister. She just turned six last week and has begun training for the royal court.”
Caroline performed a perfect curtsy and said, “Good afternoon, kind Sir.”
Merik knelt on one knee and repeated the hand-kissing gesture with Caroline. “I’m glad to make your acquaintance, young Lady. It appears that beauty runs in your family, Queen Libeth.”
The little girl grinned with embarrassment as Merik stood back up. “It has been my honor to meet you all. However, I should be going so that the two of you may have lunch.”
Merik turned to Yadin. “If you’ll permit me, I’ll see you in one week. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.”
Merik turned once again, preparing to make his exit. “Queen Libeth, I wish you well. Your child will be strong and healthy.”
With no further farewells, Merik headed out of the throne room. He was nearly out the door when Queen Libeth spoke. “Merik, how do you know of my child’s health?”
