Out in the darkened rear parking lot there were only a few cars. Robert was parked off to one side near some high brush, and, as he guided Eileen toward his car, she slipped her arm around his waist and leaned her head against his shoulder.
“I’m really happy I met you tonight, Robert,” she told him.
He put his arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze. “And it was a decided pleasure to meet you,” he said. “I don’t know what I would have done with myself tonight if you hadn’t come along when you did,” he added sincerely.
When they got to the passenger side of his car Eileen leaned against the door and looked up at him. It was an obvious signal, so Robert bent down to kiss her. She put her arms around his neck and pulled him closer as their lips met. The kiss was passionate and lasted for nearly a minute. When they broke for air Eileen held on to his neck, her face close to his.
“That was nice,” she whispered, her eyes still closed.
“Yes, it was,” Robert said as he scanned the empty parking lot. “I love you,” he added quietly, his lips close to her ear.
Eileen was fairly drunk, but that statement made her open her eyes in surprise. “What did you say?” she asked.
Robert pulled back a little so he could look into her eyes. “I love you,” he repeated softly. “I will always love you,” he said with obvious sincerity.
Eileen smiled up at him in confusion. “Um…well, that’s very sweet, Robert,” she said, “but don’t you think it’s a bit early in our relationship to be making statements like that?” She didn’t notice his right hand move up under the back of his jacket.
