Overhill and Dale
By: Terry D. Scheerer

Dale turned to Overhill. "We have sufficient...?"

"Oh, indeed we do, indeed we do," Overhill quickly assured him.

Dale turned back to Ms. White. "We seem to have all of the information we need to begin our search," he told her, nodding his head vigorously.

She snorted and stood up, tucking her purse beneath her left arm. "I will expect to hear from you, then. Soon," she told them, firmly.

They both jumped up as she turned to leave and Dale moved quickly around the edge of the room to reach the door before she did and opened it for her. "It has been a pleasure, Ms. White," he told her, bowing slightly as she brushed past him, her head up in the air. Overhill followed her into the outer office, but there was not room for him to get past her to open the other door. She got there first and then had to squeeze herself into the corner so he could pull the door open for her.

She pinned them both with her deadly glare. "Soon," she repeated and turned to leave, then stopped, staring at the lettering on the office door. "You know," she said, "you should really change this to 'Overhill and Dale'. It has a much better ring to it." She turned back to them, said, "Good day, gentlemen," and left the office. Overhill slowly closed the door and they both sighed, then moved to seat themselves at their respective metal desks.

As the sound of their client's high heels striking the wooden floor faded down the hall, Dale asked, "Well, what do you think?"

"Oh, I am afraid that she is quite mad," Overhill responded.

"You state the obvious, as usual," Dale said, with a sad smile. "The female of this species appears to always be somewhat unbalanced. I was referring, however, to the lady's suggestion."

"Ah, yes, of course." Overhill was quiet for a moment and then smiled. "I think it would be an excellent idea."

Dale nodded agreement and they both placed their hands flat on their desks and stared silently at each other. As they did so, the frosted glass in the outer door seemed to waver for a moment and then it vanished altogether for a few seconds, but shortly reappeared, good as new.

At the stairwell, Ms. White suddenly remembered something she felt the investigators should know about Jake's somewhat peculiar habits. Mumbling to herself, she walked back down the short hallway and entered the office without bothering to knock.
