He ran his hand over his hair and felt a bandage wrapped around his forehead. He looked under his blankets and discovered that he wore a hospital gown. His body felt clean. Even his mouth tasted minty fresh.
He quickly sat up in bed as he realized something. He must have been in an accident. The case of the casket was nothing more than a nightmare. He blew out a sigh of relief. He couldn’t wait to tell Janice about his bizarre vision. Surely someone had informed her that he was here.
He felt ravenous; he needed something to eat. Was it lunch-time yet? He looked at the clock on the wall. It read 3:45pm. Good grief! How long had he been unconscious? What day was it anyway?
Just then, the door to his room swung open. To his surprise, Stacy Clemmons walked in behind an aide who carried a tray of food. He was so astonished at Stacy’s apparent brazenness that he hardly knew what to say. She had a lot of nerve being here.
The aide set the food plate on the bedside table and left. Dan didn’t want more trouble, so spoke to Stacy in a stern tone. “You’d better leave now, Stacy. What you did last night was…”
With sad eyes, she looked at him. “I’m not Stacy. I’m her twin sister, Macy. And I hate to tell you this, but your wife is… is…”
Dan looked at her in shock. Understanding appeared in his watery eyes as he realized the horrible truth. “So, it wasn’t a dream after all.”
“I’m afraid not, though I wish it were.”
“What happened?” Dan asked mournfully.
Macy explained that she and her twin sister, Stacy, lived together. She knew Stacy had a meeting with Dan at the mortuary. She became worried when Stacy didn’t return to their apartment last night. As part of a long term agreement, they each promised to always call the other if they’d be out all night. As sisters, they trusted each other implicitly.
When Stacy didn’t call or show up, Macy went looking for her. She checked the funeral home first. Despite the hour, she decided to investigate her sister’s last known location.
When Macy arrived at the mortuary, she found the side-entrance door unlocked so let herself in. She checked several offices, all empty, then saw light leaking out under a door at the end of the hall. When she investigated, she found the door opened up to another hallway.
All the rooms were locked except for a set of double doors on the end marked “Casket Storage.” She heard voices talking on the other side of the doors. Maybe her sister was in there.
As she quietly opened the door, she heard Stacy’s name mentioned. A woman claimed that she had killed Stacy. She threatened to bury Dan alive. Although Macy didn’t believe her sister was dead, she couldn’t allow such a grisly crime. No one deserved horror on that scale, no matter what they’d done.
