Talk Show
Part Two
By: Steve Bolin

A blaring horn brought Tim out of his delusion and he looked up to see the front end of an old Mack truck swerving through the intersection in an attempt to miss him.

The chrome grill and bull dog ornament of the Mack was the last thing he saw. Blackness engulfed his mind as 10 tons of truck slammed into the driver’s side door and sent the Cutlass spinning across the median and into the ditch of the roadside embankment.

Robert came to a screeching halt at the scene of the accident. He bolted out of his Corvette and ran toward Tim’s demolished car. Robert arrived at the twisted Cutlass out of breath. From the looks of the vehicle, he didn’t expect to find Tim alive. He pulled his cell phone from the pocket of his suit jacket and called 911.

The driver’s side window was shattered and it only took a firm shove to knock it out of the way. The air bag had employed but it wasn’t enough to keep Tim from dying. The odd angle of Tim’s head suggested that his neck was broken. Even without that, there was enough splattered blood to make a horror movie.

Just to double check, Robert placed his fingers on Tim’s neck and felt for a pulse. There was nothing. He gave this and other vital information to the feminine voice taking his emergency call. He heard sirens in the distance.

Robert wiped the broken glass from Tim’s face. He noticed a tiny silver disc on the inside of Tim’s left ear. Frowning, Robert touched it with his pinky and the blood covered disc stuck to his finger tip like glue. It looked to be a metal fragment from the damaged car. He put the disc in his suit jacket pocket, taking care to wipe it clean of blood first.

As the paramedics arrived, he straightened his tie in preparation to meet them. He gave them all the information they asked for. There was nothing left to do here. There was no need to stay and give a report to the police. A dozen people had witnessed the event. Besides, he had something more important to do.

Cell phone still in hand, Robert punched another set of numbers. He heard ringing and a few moments later a familiar voice answered, “Hello.”

Robert’s voice shook nervously. “Becky, you need to meet me at the Indianapolis Memorial Hospital. Tim has been in a very bad accident.”

“Oh my God! Is he all right?”

“Meet me at the hospital. I’ll explain everything there.” It’d be better to give her the news in person. She’d still be devastated but he’d be there to help hold her together.

At the hospital, Becky learned the bad news. Robert saw the sorrowful look on her face. Her heart was shattered in a thousand pieces. Today was supposed to be a festive day. She and Robert were planning to give Tim an early, surprise birthday party today. Robert secretly picked her up earlier this morning and dropped her off at the mall to shop for a gift.

Robert insisted that she stay with him that evening. It wasn’t good for her to be alone. Becky couldn’t explain how the two of them ended up in bed together later that night.

Within the next few days, police arrived to question Becky of her whereabouts during Tim’s death. They thought it strange that Tim died so soon after their marriage. They seemed suspicious of her million dollar insurance money. Had the two of them been fighting lately?

They asked her not to leave the city until their investigation was over. They questioned her a few more times, but she had a rock solid alibi. Ultimately, the police found no wrongdoing.

One week after Tim’s funeral, Robert and Becky were engaged to be married. She was now one million dollars richer from the life insurance policy that Tim purchased. Although mournful, she was ready to jump into the arms of the first person to show her love. That person was Robert.

A few days after their marriage, Becky decided to drop her insurance policy. Robert agreed, suggesting she do it first thing Monday morning, as the insurance office would be closed during the weekend. The two of them went to bed shortly thereafter.
