Talk Show
Part Two
By: Steve Bolin

That evening, several hours after midnight, Robert got out of bed without waking Becky. He spent a considerable amount of time in the bathroom. When finished, he dressed in a nice suit. He placed a clip-on tie at his collar and attached a tie clip to it. He was now prepared to leave. He neglected to leave a note.

Now completely dressed, Robert crept over to Becky, still sleeping soundly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny silver disc. Wetting his fingertip with saliva, he put the disc on his little finger then placed the disc into Becky’s ear. Thanks to her nightly sedatives, she stirred slightly but did not wake.

When Tim and Becky came into his office for physical exams, they explained that it was for insurance purposes. When Robert heard they each were getting a million dollar insurance policy, he formulated a two-part plan. With the first half accomplished, he’d now complete the second half of the scheme.

Robert quietly walked out of the house and crept around toward the bedroom window. In the dark, he pressed a small button on the end of his tie clip. Softly, like a ghostly whisper, he began speaking into the tie clip. He described a horrifying assassination in which Becky kills Robert by electrocuting him in the bathtub. What worked for Tim would likely work on her as well, especially since he had recently prescribed her medication which caused hallucinations as a side effect. It was the same medication he had prescribed to Tim.

Through the bedroom window, Robert saw Becky tossing and turning as the tiny transmitter in her ear whispered his every dark word into her dreams. In the morning, she’d find a mess in the bathroom.

The radio floating in the tub would perfectly match her nightmare – and he’d be gone. He’d stay out of the house and monitor her waking moments through tiny, strategically placed cameras – the same ones he’d used with Tim.

In the morning she’d find a radio in the tub and his Corvette unmoved. If she went to church, he’d follow her in the ‘Vette and lose himself in the huge congregation. He’d whisper soft words of accusation in her head. In her fragile condition, her sanity would break even faster than Tim’s.

The voices he’d whisper into her ear would seem to originate from inanimate objects, or from no place at all. As the day progressed, her slippery hold on sanity would loosen and push her to the brink of madness. Like Tim, she’d eventually kill herself trying to get the voices out of her head.

Robert smiled as he thought of the million dollars already sitting in the bank from Tim’s death. As Becky’s husband, he was the sole beneficiary when she died. With an additional one million dollars on the line, he was determined that she’d die before she cancelled the policy on Monday.

By this time tomorrow, he’d be a very rich man. The cash would come in handy for a hostile take-over of a growing company, Genetics Research Corporation. He and Dan “The Man” McMann had a late night meeting scheduled with the board of directors next week. Life was looking good. With GRC stock in his portfolio, how could he go wrong?
