"Here, now," the wizard said, looking at the growing pile of presents.
"Just how many bags are there, anyway?"
"Well, each of us made two bags of gifts, so that would be about a
hundred bags, all together," one of the elves told him.
"This will never do," Chricrin said, shaking his head in amazement. He
picked up one of the small bags and hefted it in his hand, then turned to
look at the sleigh. With him riding in the front, there would only be enough room for maybe half of these bags in the sleigh, and didn't think he would have time to make more than one round trip before sunrise on the
morrow.
"Hmm," he said. Opening the bag he held in his hand, he looked inside and then brought the bag up to his mouth and starting blowing air into the bag. The elves backed away in wonder as the small bag grew bigger and bigger as Chricrin continued to blow into it.
Eventually, the bag was almost as large as the wizard himself and he
finally stopped, his face nearly as red as his robe. "Whew," he said
with a smile. "That made me a bit dizzy."
Then he held open the large bag and told the elves to begin emptying all
of the other bags into the one he held. Shaking their heads, they all
lined up and started to pour their small bags of gifts into the larger
bag. Elf after elf came up and emptied his bag of goodies, but the large
bag held by the wizard never seemed to fill up.
When the last bag was gone, Chricrin took the big bag full of gifts and
lifted it into the sleigh, as if it weighed next to nothing. He turned
to the gathered and amazed elves, gave them a sly wink and with a finger
alongside his nose, said, "It be magic, ye know?"
As Chricrin climbed into the sleigh, one of the elves brought forth a
long list and a map, handing them over to the wizard. "We've checked the
list twice," the elf said, "and everyone on it gets a gift. The map will
show the quickest way to all of the towns and our reindeer know how to
get back home, so when you're all finished, just give them their heads
and they'll bring you right back here."
"All right, lads, it's off we go," Chricrin said and gave the reins a
quick snap. The elves all cheered as the reindeer trotted away, each
step taking the sleigh farther and farther up into the air.
Once the sleigh was fully airborne, the wizard circled back over the
waving elves and they heard him give forth a hearty laugh. "Ho, Ho, Ho,"
