As we made our way out of the dorm, Rich and I found ourselves standing in a white room lit with neon light; the entire area was spotless. Somehow the rain had not gotten to this part of the school. I took a closer look at the walls and realized that the entire room was made of brick. The only thing in there was a set of stairs leading both up to the third floor and back down to the lobby. At the opposite end of the room was another doorway that would take us to the east wing.
Rich and I walked through the doorway which led into the other room; I was surprised that there were still working lights on that side. We were now standing in the main heart of the school and much like in the west wing of the building, doors ran down both sides of the hallways. Here though, they lead into classrooms rather than dorm rooms. Each one was the same--brick walls, and an old green chalkboard placed on the wall in the front of eighteen empty desks.
We checked each room as the two of us made our way through the school; there was no sign of the principle’s office anywhere. But I knew that it had to be in this wing of the building, since Rich and I had already searched the other wing without locating it. We reached the end of the hall and there was one last room to check. I went to open the door, but it was locked. Richard suggested that we cut our losses and move on to the next section of the school and try to catch up with the others. But I wanted to find out what was in there. I had to ram the weak wooden door only a few times before it flew open. It was no surprise that it was dark inside. I looked inside but could see nothing.
Just as I was about to walk away, I was grabbed by the throat and pulled into the dark room. My back slammed up against a book case next to a chalkboard; as I landed against it, it shattered into several pieces. I sat there in the shadows trying to regain my thoughts, then I realized what had attacked me as I heard the unmistakable hissing of an Unlucky. It was a few feet away from the exit, just standing there staring at Richard while he called out to see if I was all right. I found it strange that the creature did not try and attack my brother. It only hissed at him, but did not advance. The closer he got to the door the louder the beast got. I told Richard to stay where he was, that he was apparently safe as long as he stayed outside in the hallway.
It seemed to be protecting something, but what? I did not know that the Unluckys had the ability to comprehend the idea of protecting something. I needed to get my gun before that demon got to me! I crawled slowly from the shattered bookcase over to the desk at the front of the classroom. Shifting my balance, I quickly got to my feet. I saw that the shotgun had landed directly behind the Unlucky, only a few feet from the line of desks that filled the classroom.
Cautiously and slowly I made my way toward the gun, weaving in and out of the few desks that were between me and my weapon. With each step I also got closer to the Unlucky. My heart was beating at a rapid rate and so loudly I was surprised that the monster couldn't hear it. Now I was standing directly behind the creature. Slowly I knelt down to fetch my gun. I had my fingertips on the weapon when the Unlucky turned around and instinctively attacked me.
It was trying to bite at me, but I was able to wedge my leg between us and heaved the beast into the cluster of desks behind it. The Unlucky landed in the second row of seating but was back on its feet before I could pick my gun up and charged right for me. As it jumped for me I dove for safety behind the large desk in front of the room. The demon crashed into the remains of the book case, but this time I made my move before it could get back up. I pulled the short metal flagpole off of the wall, ran over to the creature which was on its hands and knees and as I ran up to the beast, it looked at me and I drove the spear-point of the flagpole into its eye.
