I lay there motionless, welcoming my death, when something happened; it was perhaps a hidden memory which suddenly surfaced due to my elevated stress level. I’m not sure what it was, but I thought of my son Michael. He was young, perhaps five or six and we were in our old home playing catch with a huge rubber ball. I accepted that my son was going to be my final thought, but as I focused on my son’s face it suddenly aged into the face that I recognized today. It was him and the others; they were still inside the school. All of them were holding the doors closed as the Unluckys tried to ram their way inside. Each of them appeared to be in tears, and then the Unluckys made their way inside and instantly started attacking my son and the others. When that horrific image raced through my head, I felt a deep warm sensation work its way up my body. By the time it reached my head, I felt renewed with a deep understanding that if I were to die so would the others.
I worked my knee between the creature and I pushed outward, launching it backward. At the same time I reached up to grab anything that I could get my hands on to use as a weapon against them. What my hand landed on was the edge of the lever that would automatically shut the doors. Without giving it any further thought I pushed the handle forward and looked back to make sure that the doors closed, which they did. As they closed the demon’s head got caught in between the door and the frame of the bus, severing the beast’s head. It dropped down, landing on the bottom step with its eyes fixed on me.
I left the decapitated head where it lay and quickly got into the driver’s seat. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the keys, then tried each one until the correct one finally slid into the ignition. The Unluckys began to slam their fists against the bus in a last effort to get inside.
I pumped the gas pedal a few times and turned the key to start the bus. At first there was nothing. I continued to pump gas into its lines while trying to start the engine. My heart skipped a beat when a loud noise erupted from behind the bus. Then I realized the sound was a backfire; the motor which was now running!
I released the brake, pushed the in clutch and quickly shifted the transmission into first. The bus slowly rolled forward as it made a horrid sound, which could be described as several large metal plates grinding into each other. Then with a sudden jerk the bus began to move. I tried to use the windshield wipers to clear away the rain, but the rubber on the wipers crumbled, leaving the metal to rake across the glass which made a worse sound than that of the gears screeching. But as the vehicle moved gained momentum, the quieter it became.
The school bus pushed its way through the courtyard and crushed anything or everything that got in the way. The vehicle began to bounce as it rolled over several Unluckys that were willing to die in order to slow or possibly stop my progress. Even as the bus crushed the life out of dozens of the creatures, the demons continued to stand in front of the bus, some hissing and moaning, while others tried to get inside. But that did not deter me and I moved onward heading out of the courtyard. The last Unlucky that I hit before I reached the front appeared to have erupted on impact. A thick coat of the beast's dark tarry blood covered the windshield. For a moment I was driving blind, unable to see what was in front of me but that didn’t last too long, as the rain washed away some of the blood from the windshield.
