End of the Line Part 3

About that time, the bus began to sway back and forth. I sat up to look around and saw that the hoard of Unluckys had reached the bus! Some moaned and hissed while others tried to get inside, which was why the vehicle was swaying. I looked back over to the emergency exit as I heard it being slammed closed. Michael ran down the aisle, passed me and jumped into the driver’s seat, while the others sat in different locations throughout the bus. I heard the engine start up, causing a loud backfire that was accompanied with the sound of grinding metal. I noticed that Rose was sitting behind me. I looked over the back of the bench and asked her if we got everything. She nodded and gave me a weak smile. I could tell that my sister was tired and the thought of giving up was first thing on her mind.

She asked how I was holding up--that I looked half dead. For a moment, I thought about informing her that I was half dead, but instead I told her that I was all right, although, I knew that the next day I wouldn’t be able to move.

We both looked over toward my son when he started cursing out loud. I asked him what was the problem and Michael told me that the Unluckys had us pinned in. I got up and walked over next to my son and I understood Mike’s concerns when I looked out the windshield. The thousands of Unluckys had formed a perfect formation around the bus not giving us an inch to move. I told my son to keep the motor running as I turned away from him to face the other four passengers. I asked if anyone had any ideas. Everyone looked at each other without a word being said.

During that time the sound of the Unluckys outside intensified and the bus continued to sway from side to side. I turned back toward Michael and told him to hit the gas, which he did. There was an ever so slight tug forward as the motor raced, but then there was nothing.

The professor stood up and came over to the front of the bus where Michael and I were. He wanted to know where the keys to the SUV were and I asked him what his plan was. He explained that one of us could go up through the port that leads to the top of the bus. That person would have a road flare which he would light and throw out into the crowd of Unluckys. At that time he would slip out the emergency exit, get into the SUV and lead the creatures away from the bus which would allow us to gather speed to get out of the city.

Moments later I found myself on top of the bus, holding the lit flare, trying to get the attention of those thousands of demons that surrounded me. I waved my hands around, shouting and screaming until they were all looking at me. I threw the roadside flare as hard as I could out into the crowd of Unluckys. Just as the professor had predicted they turned away from the bus and were heading toward the burning glow of the flare.

I turned around to get back inside the bus and saw that the professor was inside the SUV. He slowly drove off while honking the horn, that caused the Unluckys to surge over to where he was. The professor only went a few yards before the SUV started to sputter and backfire. The vehicle came to a stop next to what appeared to be a large gas main. By that time I felt the bus begin to move. I quickly got back inside the bus and ran up the aisle to the back of the vehicle where the emergency exit was. As I reached the back door, I saw the professor getting out of the SUV. The Unluckys instantly attacked him, ripping and tearing. I couldn’t understand why he did what he had done. I continued to watch in horror as these creatures appeared to eat him alive, but the professor never stopped moving.
